HIP INJURIES & REPLACEMENT

Hip Replacement in Fort Myers

Advanced Orthopedics & Sports Medicine physicians, serving Fort Myers performs total hip and direct anterior hip replacements. In fact, total hip replacement (or arthroplasty) remains one of the most effective orthopedic surgery operations.

Direct Anterior Hip Replacement

This minimally invasive surgery involves a three to four inch incision on the front of the hip. The procedure enables joint replacement without detaching tendons but instead moves muscles aside along the natural tissue planes. This usually means less pain, an  accelerated recovery, and a more normal function resulting in a return to typical daily activities shortly after surgery.

Direct anterior hip replacement is a newer technique and requires specialized training. It has potential for those with severe hip arthritis.

Traditional Hip Replacement Surgery

For a full hip replacement an incision is made in the side or the back of the hip.  In both instances, the muscles and tendons are detached from the hip which is then replaced with an artificial joint usually made from metal and plastic components. Then the muscles and tendons are reattached.

The procedures can result in increased pain post-surgery as well as a longer time for a full recovery. Recovery instructions usually include no crossing of the legs, no excessive rotation, and no bending more than 90 degrees. Hip dislocation is the most common hip replacement surgery complication.

Whichever approach is used, hip replacement boasts an achievement rate approaching 95% with success defined as a lessening of pain, increased functionality, and a quality of life improvement.

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, hip replacements are one of the most common US joint replacement operations with 300,000+ performed in the country annually.
