What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Interestingly enough the term refers to an inch wide wrist tunnel enclosed by ligaments and bones on the palm side of the hand. Through this tunnel runs the median nerve as it terminates in the hand. Because the nerve controls sensations in the index, middle, and one side of the ring finger as well the thumb, if it is compressed, it can result in carpal tunnel syndrome.

Carpal Tunnel Symptoms and Causes

Symptoms include tingling, pain, numbness, and weakness in the hand and as well as the arm. Dropping things and being unable to perform activities such as buttoning your shirt are also indicators of problems with the median nerve.

Studies also suggest the carpal tunnel occurs mostly in females and older people. Pressure on the median nerve is caused by one or a combination of the following:

  • Repetitive motion- Using the hand and wrist the same way (as done on a keyboard) for an extended period.

  • The size of the tunnel, which may run smaller in some families.

  • Changing hormones can cause swelling.

  • Hand and write placement- Positioning the hand the same way over a prolonged period.

  • General health- Carpal tunnel is associated with rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes among other health issues.

Unfortunately, the syndrome tends to worsen over time, so early diagnosis leads to the best results. Treatment might be as simple as avoiding certain activities or wearing a brace or wrist splint. For serious cases and to prevent further damage, surgery to relieve pressure on the median nerve may be required.

Did you know that Jessica Alba (actor, long hours at the computer) Matthew Perry (actor, gaming), David Price (pitcher, gaming), and the late Keith Emerson (keyboardist), all experienced carpal tunnel syndrome?
