PLATELET-RICH PLASMA (PRP) THERAPY

In harmony with the practice of providing our valued patient with the best treatment options, Advanced Orthopedics & Sports Medicine sometimes recommends the use of Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP therapy, as a non-surgical treatment option for certain orthopedic injuries.

Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) is a concentration of platelets and growth factors created from a small amount of your own blood. These cells are vital for tissue regeneration and repair and have regenerative power. When these cells are injected into an area that needs healing, your body responds by accelerating the process of tissue repair.

This treatment has been used by several elite athletes, including Alex Rodriquez, Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, and Hines Ward to treat their sports injuries.

Some conditions for which PRP therapy might be considered:

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Muscle, ligament and tendon tears

  • Tendonitis

  • Inflammatory conditions

  • Rotator cuff tears

  • Tennis elbow

The goal of PRP therapy is to quickly alleviate pain and accelerate the healing of injuries. As of now, PRP appears to be an effective treatment option. While it has been around for many years, most insurance companies still consider this treatment experimental and deny coverage.
